3G Spectrum Auctions in India have finished in India almost a year back. Almost all the telecom operators are testing 3G services in major cities of the country.
I came to Pune recently and have been playing off with Idea 3G on my iPhone 4.
I’m not quite happy with the 3G speeds provided by Idea. The average download speed is around 115 Kbps and the upload speed is 87 Kbps. I tested 3G speeds in Pashan, Kalyani Nagar & Pimpri-Chinchwad area. I got almost same speeds in these areas.
Also, a couple of months back I tested Vodafone 3G in Shivaji Nagar Area. And the download speeds was going upto 480 Kbps.
Almost all the Telecom operators have the same 3G speeds except BSNL. I’ve heard BSNL 3G provides upto 3 Mbps download speed. This is quite good as compared to other Telecom Operators in India. 3G in India is still in the testing phase. Let’s wait and see if the 3G speeds will improve once the service rolls over the whole country.

That is no problem with idea 3G & it’s network. Problem is idea sim card, that is 32k. If u have noticed.
I am ported to idea from Vodafone so I got 64k sim, and my friend who is with idea from last8 month he still have 32k. We tested both sim with 3G network, also checked by swapping phones. But result shows that 64k gives 3mbps and 32k limited to 256k. We talked with customers care, but they are not agree about above results. They say sim will not create problem. I request you to checkup with any friend who’s sim 64k and ported in idea

I’ve a 32K Idea sim card. And I think I’ll have to get a bigger size sim now for enjoying 3G speeds.

The speed is quite good.. What sim size are you using? 32K or more?
Seeing a 3G signal on phone does not mean you will get 3G speed. You must subscribe to 3G plan so that provider provisions your SIM for 3G speeds. From your tests it reveals that you have not activated 3G plan and still on 2G plan but your phone is in 3G mode.
Idea 3G gives good download speeds of up 4mbps (sometimes) but Idea has capped the upload speed to around 100Kbps. This is to prevent you from using VoIP for international calls.
