Microsoft Corp said on Friday a version of its long awaited Windows 7 operating system will be made available from next week.
The version, known as a ‘release candidate‘, or RC, essentially means the world’s largest software company is in the final stages of completing the operating system, the successor to the unpopular Windows Vista.
Microsoft said the RC will be available for download by program developers and IT professionals subscribing to the MSDN and TechNet networks on April 30 and available more broadly on May 5.
The company has still not said when the finished version would begin to be installed on PCs or available to buy in shops, but the company’s chief financial officer said on Thursday it could be as early as July.
That would allow Microsoft to capitalize on back-to-school sales and set it up for a strong holiday shopping season.
Windows 7, which has been getting good reviews in limited public tests over the last few months, is much cleaner looking and features an array of new touch-screen functions. Microsoft says it will also interact better with digital cameras and music players.

Skype will begin offering its Skype for iPhone application on the App Store starting Tuesday. The company will officially announce the new app at the CTIA trade show in Las Vegas.
Using Skype for iPhone, users with an iPhone, or second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone, can make free Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi to other Skype users worldwide; have the ability to call landlines or mobile phone numbers (Skype calling rates apply); send and receive instant messages; receive calls to a personal online number on Skype; and see when your Skype contacts are online.
Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer, said that Skype for iPhone provides the same simplicity that the desktop app provides to its users.
Skype for iPhone will be a free download from the App Store.

Microsoft announced Friday night that computer enthusiasts will have a while longer to get their hands on the beta version of Windows 7.
Microsoft said that the test version of the operating system will be available for download through Feb. 10. Previously, Microsoft had said that the OS would only be open through late this month.
“We are at a point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs, so we are beginning to plan the end of general availability for Windows 7 Beta,” Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc said in the blog posting. “Because enthusiasm continues to be so high for the Windows 7 Beta and we don’t want anyone to miss out we will keep the Beta downloads open through February 10th.”
Those who start the download process before Feb. 10 will have until Feb. 12 to finish the task.
The deadline applies to the general public, while members of Microsoft’s TechNet and MSDN developer programs will continue to have access to the code, LeBlanc said.
CEO Steve Ballmer announced the beta of Windows 7 during his speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan 7. After a slight hiccup, Microsoft made the code available on Jan. 10.
