$45 Android Tablet Launched in India

The much awaited $35 $45 tablet has been launched in India. The tablet is named “Aakash” and is an initiative of the Ministry for Human Resources headed by minister Kapil Sibal. The reports coming in till yesterday, spoke about the tablet selling for a price tag of $35 (Rs. 1700) will be available for a price tag of $45 (Rs. 2,200).

Technical Specifications of Aakash

The $45 tablet will sport a 7-inch display touchscreen. It will come loaded with 256 MB RAM & Android 2.2 operating system. It has 2 GB inbuilt storage & also supports upto 32GB of expandable memory. Camera with video recording capabilities is also included in “Aakash”. The tablet will also support video conferencing.

Also, two USB ports are provided in the $45 tablet.

The manufacturing contract is with Canadian based company Datawind.

Pricing & Availability

Aakash will cost about $45 or Rs. 2,200. The first batch of 500 tablets will be handed over to students after the release.

“Initially, 700 Akash tablets will be made every day and we expect the production to pick up when more companies join in to manufacture the device,” ministry spokeswoman Mamata Varma told AFP.

There’s no word on marketing strategy of Aakash yet. The tablet will likely be sold in schools, colleges & universities rather than in shops.

Aakash goes on sale from October 5 this year.

The other cheapest tablets available globally are $99 HP TouchPad and $199 Amazon’s Kindle Tablet. Only time will tell how much success this $45 tablet gets. Let’s wait & see.

The percentage of the population who use smartphones to place their everyday calls is staggering. Smartphones are now about 40% of all mobile phones in the US. A No Phone Smartphone

For any application junkie looking to forgo phone contracts, the Samsung Galaxy S 3.6 WiFi Mobile Device is a dream come true. It allows users access to the privileges of having high speed internet on a mobile device, all without being committed to monthly phone bill. Users can watch video and listen to music, as well as engage in social networking, surf the internet, and play games. The only downside is that the Samsung Galaxy Device itself does not have the ability to make or receive phone calls. Therefore it is a good alternative for users who are more interested in apps than in phone calls.

In order to be able to use the Samsung Galaxy Device as a phone, users must download Skype or a similar VoIP program. The Samsung Galaxy Device can be compared to Apple’s iPod Touch in the sense that both are devices that can be used for entertainment purposes but do not make phone calls.

Galaxy S Similarities

The Samsung Galaxy S 3.6 is an Android 2.3 device. It boasts many of the same features as the Samsung Galaxy smartphones, such as a 1 GHz OMAP processor, the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network and a 8GB/16 GB memory, which can be expanded by purchasing a bigger microSD card. The device’s screen is 3.65 inches in length and it comes with a 0.3 MP VGA camera on the front, giving it the capability to make video calls. The device also has a 2-megapixel camera in the rear. Similar to most smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S 3.6 comes with GPS tracking, Bluetooth, a compass, and an accelerometer and it supports the codecs needed to run video and audio on the device.

Release & Pricing

The Samsung Galaxy Device goes on sale in the United Kingdom in October 2011. In both the U.S. and the U.K. market, the Samsung Galaxy Device is being marketed to people who want to be able to access games, apps and videos on-the-go without having to commit to buying an expensive cell phone with an expensive plan. The high speed internet access available through wifi will allow users to stay connected to the world without having to buy an iPhone or Android phone. The Samsung Galaxy S 3.6 has many of the same capabilities and apps as any other Android phone, for a lot less money. Anyone looking to ease into the technology of smartphones may want to test the waters with a Samsung Galaxy S 3.6.

The device will be available in white & black colors. Samsung Galaxy S 3.6 WiFi will be available for £149 for the 8GB model and £169 for the 16GB

Samsung Galaxy S2 – Technical Specifications & Review

Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II, i9100) was recently launched by Samsung. It’s available in some of the countries including South Korea, UK, India, etc. It’s not officially yet available in the US.

Sifting through the array of packaging and getting your hands on the Galaxy S2 is an exciting moment. On first appearances it’s handsome, stylish and notably thin – at only 8.49mm deep and with a 4.3″ screen — which really accentuates its slender and impressive physique.

Its plastic backing is sturdy and surprisingly strong considering its size. It’s nice in the hand and really does look like the sort of phone that would be the envy of your friends.

Switching on the S2 is a quick process, with the phone speeding to full functionality within seconds. Its screen is impressive, the Super AMOLED Plus display cracks to life with deep vivid coloring that is quite striking on first image and one of the best screens available on any phone currently.

It’s a neat package too, Samsung’s use of Android Gingerbread is neat and its TouchWiz interface has come on in leaps and bounds and makes very subtle changes to Google’s excellent operating system.

There are some nice little programs called Samsung hubs for games, music, video and social media and some less than useful applications like Samsung’s applications store, which is bit redundant with Android Market.

Taking photo’s with the camera is a dream and the 8mp produces good quality snaps while the camcorders 1080p capture is also nice and clear. The phone’s also got quite a good ability to capture shots in lowlight and offers an array of software to add effects to your photos.

Samsung Galaxy S2

Connection to a plasma TV or monitor is easily done through the 1080p HDMI out option. A mini USB port & 3.5mm jack is provided and 32GB of memory option is available with an SD card.

One of the best things about the Samsung is its responsiveness. It’s a super fast device, powered by a huge 1.2GHz dual core Orion chip which really eats up anything thrown at it, including Flash video and even the most powerful games. Its 1GB of RAM gives it a cocktail of specs many netbooks or tablets would be proud of and it has no processing issue to speak of currently. In fact it will be interesting to see how much power draining software can be put on before it begins to lag a little – we suspect a lot.

Hands-on the Samsung Galaxy S II is a bit of a dream with few faults to speak of, aside from some redundant Samsung applications and perhaps the speaker at the back is not the most amazing but over all this is a device with a huge amount of potential that will the envy of your friends.

Price & Availability

Samsung Galaxy S2 is available in the UK on contract basis. The price starts at £79.99 on Orange for a 2 year contract. Besides O2 is providing Samsung Galaxy S2 for free with a minimum monthly contract of £38.50 for 24 months. You can compare some good contracts at priced at Best Mobile Contracts.

Samsung Galaxy S II is not yet officially available in the US, but is expected to launch somewhere around June/July 2011. But you can buy it from eBay.com or Amazon for about $800 USD. In India, Samsung Galaxy S2 is priced at about Rs. 32,000.
