4 Reasons Why You Will Enjoy Mac OS X Lion

by Mahesh Kukreja on October 17, 2011

This is a guest post! If you want to write for us, check out the Guest Post section.

If you are an Apple user, you will enjoy using your Macintosh already. The latest operating system is available, as long as you have the right computer to handle the weight of the operating system. There were a few bugs at the beginning, and they seem to have been sorted out very fast. While Apple is still not, and probably not going to be, the computer to be used widely in business, because the majority of business computers still need a Windows terminal emulator as a part of their network support, for example. There are a growing number of Apple users in the market. Here is a look at some of the more fun and practical reasons why you will enjoy Mac OS X Lion.

Support

Computer support for the launch of the Mac OS X Lion has been huge. If you have a problem, there is an answer online. There is nothing worse than not knowing what is wrong with your computer. This is certainly not the case with Lion. I purchased the operating system online, and did find a few problems at the beginning. All my questions were answered online. The operating system has already updated itself very fast, and those bugs have disappeared. If you cannot find the support online, there is always an Apple approved Apple repairs provider available because Apple has become so popular.

Reboot and Clean Up

Another amazing feature about Mac OS X Lion is that it includes an operating system disk partition on your computer during installation. This means if you do have a problem, you will not need to use the original disk to boot from, and then do any repairs, because you already have that as a part of the operating system. Looking for those boot disks 6 months after you purchased is something we have all gone through.

iOS Like Features

For those of us who are used to the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, additional features in Mac OS X Lion make it much easier to use. Instead of just having the traditional desktop, we can use our Macbook with Lion like it is an iPhone. We can wipe, swipe and do many other actions with our mouse pad, just like we do with our iPhone or iPad. This is excellent integration for those of use who are more used to the iPhone an iPad than other Mac devices.

Hidden Features

Getting to know all the new features of Mac OS X Lion will take some time. The obvious ones such as opening multiple desktops and getting to know how different types of swipes will affect what happens on your machine will not take long. It is worth watching the full introductory video, and reading the manual, because there is a whole lot more. Further to that, there are even more hidden features. Search these out on the internet yourself.

Conclusion

Apple computers are not for everyone. They are still lagging behind in business because of the special needs (particularly computer network support) that many businesses need, especially the older and larger corporations. At the same time, Mac OS X Lion is very practical, smooth and easy to use.

Apple iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II

by Mahesh Kukreja on October 5, 2011

Apple announced the iPhone 4S on October 4th. We were hoping to get a complete upgrade including a bigger display and an aluminum back. But, Apple has retained the external design of iPhone 4 with internal hardware modifications.

Samsung Galaxy S II has been available since April 2011. It was recently launched in the US on AT&T.

I’ve chosen Samsung Galaxy S II to compare with iPhone 4S. Samsung Galaxy S II has quite good features to compare with Apple’s iPhone.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy S II has a better screen size & a 1.2 GHz CPU. Also, it has 1 GB RAN. But iPhone 4S has a dual core GPU that gives 7x more performance than iPhone 4. The primary camera of the 4S sports a CMOS sensor with better lighting. The secondary camera on iPhone 4S is just VGA while Galaxy S II has a 2 megapixel secondary camera.

Also, iPhone 4S has 960 x 640 display resolution with only 800 x 480 on Galaxy S II. Galaxy S II also sports a Gorilla glass. iPhone 4S doesn’t have a Gorilla glass but the quality is nearly the same as that of a Gorilla glass.

Not to forget, Apple iPhone 4S comes with iOS 5 which has more than 200 new features than iOS 4. Large number of apps are available for the iPhone 4S. Galaxy S II comes with Android 2.3.4. It also has good number of apps and games.

In the end, I’d like to say there’s a big competition between iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II. There’s not much difference between the prices of both these devices. If you’re a loyal Apple fan, then you can go for iPhone 4S. But, if you’d like to try something new, you can buy Samsung Galaxy S II.

Apple iPhone Software 3.0 ‘impressive’

by Mahesh Kukreja on March 19, 2009

Apple took the wraps off the next version of its iPhone software this week, adding more than 100 features for consumers, as well as new ways for developers to create and enhance applications. And the industry analysts contacted by Macworld found the content of Tuesday’s iPhone 3.0 software presentation exciting.

“It’s a pretty impressive release,” said Van Baker, research vice president at technology research firm Gartner. “It further extends [Apple's] lead in terms of the kind of things the platform can do.”

The event, held on the company’s campus in Cupertino, Calif., focused on features for both developers and consumers. Of particular note was a long-promised feature that has yet to see the light of day—push notification.

Push notification lets applications that aren’t open receive notifications when something has changed. For instance, an instant messaging (IM) client could alert you when someone sends you new message, without having the application open.

“Apple just gave developers another good set of reasons to get on the platform,” said Michael Gartenberg, vice president of strategy and analysis for media and technology research firm Interpret. “Apple is making sure that the only platform you are going to get this type of functionality on is the iPhone.”

Another area of great interest to developers was in-app purchases—the ability to sell products from within an app itself. Apple gave the examples of being able sell additional levels for a game or to sell e-books books, all without making customers take a special trip to the App Store.

“With in-app purchases, Apple has opened up a whole slew of business models,” said Gartenberg. “There’s a war going on for the hearts and minds of developers, and now Apple has made it easier for developers to make and sell apps.”

Gartner’s Baker believes that these new capabilities for developers may bring something else come to the App Store as well—higher prices. With more sophisticated programs, Baker thinks that $15, $20, and $25 apps will become much more common when iPhone Software 3.0 is released.

For users, one of the biggest additons was the ability to copy and paste text, a feature previously missing from the iPhone. But the new software also brings support MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), Spotlight searching, and more. Yet some people think these features should have been there from the start.

“Apple filled a lot of holes with things like copy and paste, but that’s them playing catch-up,” said Baker. And Ross Rubin, director of analysis at market-research firm NPD Group, agreed. “They certainly grabbed a lot of the low hanging fruit that was available in the operating system upgrade,” he said.

However, it would be hard to make the argument that the changes to the iPhone’s operating system are anything but good news for Apple and its customers.

“The extensibility of the device through software is going to be the story in 2009,” said Gartenberg.
