A few minutes back, untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S & iPad 2 was released. This jailbreak supports the following:

  • iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0 & iOS 5.0.1
  • iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1

Absinthe is a GUI tool for jailbreaking iPhone 4S & iPad 2 on iOS 5.0/5.0.1. It’s released by Chronic Dev team & is available for download on their site greenpois0n.com.

How To Jailbreak iPhone 4S & iPad 2 using Absinthe?

1. Make sure to backup via iTunes before proceeding with the jailbreak

2. Download Absinthe [Mac] [Windows] [Linux]

Note: Greenpois0n.com is facing server issues & might be currently down.

3. Connect your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 via USB

4. Launch Absinthe & click Jailbreak

Absinthe - iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Jailbreak

The beginning part of the jailbreak process takes some time. Your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 will show “Restoring in Progress”. But be patient and wait till it’s completely finished.

If Absinthe shows “Error establishing a database connection”, go to Settings, turn on VPN and wait.

  • Toggle VPN only AFTER Absinthe says it’s done, or it will not work.
  • VPN SHOULD error and then reboot soon. If it does not, rerun Absinthe!

If you get a strange problem, restore your iPhone with iTunes, if you can (i.e. if you’re not on 5.0 waiting for an eventual 4S unlock).

5. Once completed, you should see an Absinthe icon on the Homescreen. Tap the Absinthe icon, and it should load the GreenPois0n website, and then your iDevice will reboot. After that, Cydia icon will have replaced the Absinthe icon.

Apple recently seeded iOS 5.0.1 final version to the public. This version fixes battery issues & some security issues.

@iH8sn0w has updated his jailbreak tool sn0wbreeze to support iOS 5.0.1. You can use sn0wbreeze to preserve baseband and unlock using ultrasn0w or Gevey sim on iPhone 4. sn0wbreeze v2.8b11 is not compatible with iPhone 4S yet.

Update 17th Jan, 2012

[How To] Preserve Baseband & Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze 2.9

Features of sn0wbreeze 2.8b11:

  • Supports iOS 5.0 (9A334)/5.0.1 (9A405)
  • Fixes iBooks sandbox crashing issues
  • Fixes location services issues with iPhone 3GS users running the iPad baseband
  • iPad baseband install option to iPhone 3GS

Supported Devices:

The following devices are supported by sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1. Note that all devices have tethered jailbreak except iPhone 3GS (Old Bootrom).

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4 GSM/CDMA
  • iPod Touch 3G
  • iPod Touch 4
  • iPad 1

How To Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 & Preserve Baseband Using sn0wbreeze v2.8b11?

1. Download iOS 5.0.1 IPSW for your iDevice

2. Download sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 from ih8sn0w.com

3. Run sn0wbreeze & point it to iOS 5.0.1 IPSW

sn0wbreeze for iOS 5.0.1

4. sn0wbreeze will then recognize the firmware

5. Click Next & you’ll see three options:

  1. Baseband Preservation Mode: This mode only preserves the baseband, doesn’t jailbreak or install Cydia, SSH, etc. This mode doesn’t “hacktivate”
  2. Simple Mode: This mode preserves the baseband as well as installs Cydia, SSH & other necessary packages that will jailbreak your iPhone
  3. Expert Mode: This mode preserves the baseband, jailbreaks your device, installs Cydia & let’s you install extra packages also. This mode gives you the option to “hacktivate” your iPhone, in case you don’t have original carrier’s sim (eg. AT&T)

6. Select the appropriate mode & click Next. Customize according to your needs & click Next. Then select Build IPSW & click Next

7. sn0wbreeze will start building the custom firmware. Wait for some time (It may take up to 10 minutes). The custom iOS 5 IPSW file will be saved on Desktop along with iBooty

8. After that, sn0wbreeze will ask you to put your iPhone into DFU mode for patching it to install custom firmware. Follow the steps on the screen

9. Once your device is in Pwned DFU mode (Black Screen), open iTunes, press Shift key + Restore & point to the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW file stored on Desktop

10. Sit back & relax. iTunes will restore your iPhone to iOS 5.0.1

Now, if you had earlier selected Simple mode or Expert mode, you must use iBooty to “boot tethered” so you can use Cydia & other jailbreak stuff. If you just selected Baseband preservation mode, you don’t need to use iBooty.

iBooty will be saved to Desktop along with custom iOS 5.0.1 IPSW.

Apple seeded iOS 5 update to the public yesterday. It’s the same GM build which was released last week to the developers. And it can be jailbroken with the already available sn0wbreeze 2.8b8 & redsn0w 0.9.9b5. (Both these tools currently provide tethered jailbreak, meaning that you need to connect iPhone to computer everytime it reboots & boot it in tethered mode)

Update: 25th Jan, 2012

[How To] Preserve Baseband & Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze 2.9

sn0wbreeze helps you to update to a newer iOS version without updating the baseband or the modem firmware. This is helpful for unlockers. Users with locked iPhones can preserve the baseband to use ultrasn0w or GEVEY sims to unlock their iPhone 3GS/4.

Note: sn0wbreeze is for Windows only. If you’re on Mac & want to build custom firmware to preserve baseband, download redsn0w 0.9.9b5.

[How To] Jailbreak iOS 5 using sn0wbreeze to Preserve Baseband

1. Download iOS 5 for your iPhone & make sure you’ve iTunes 10.5

2. Download sn0wbreeze 2.8b8 from ih8sn0w.com

sn0wbreeze 2.8b8

3. Open sn0wbreeze & point it to iOS 5 IPSW file

sn0wbreeze modes

So which mode should you select? If you want to just preserve the baseband for using GEVEY sim or ultrasn0w unlock, select baseband preservation mode. But you must have original carrier’s sim with you to activate the iPhone after restore is complete.

If you don’t have original carrier’s sim, select Expert menu & then check “hacktivate” option. This will activate the iPhone after restore. Also, when you select hacktivate option, the iPhone will be stuck after restore. Use iBooty (this will be automatically saved on Desktop along with custom IPSW) to boot tethered. Don’t panic!

Simple mode & Expert mode will also install Cydia, SSH, etc..

6. Select the appropriate mode & click Next (The screenshot below shows Expert mode)

sn0wbreeze - Expert mode

Select Build IPSW & click Next

sn0wbreeze Build IPSW

7. sn0wbreeze will start building the custom firmware. Wait for some time (It may take up to 10 minutes). The custom iOS 5 IPSW file will be saved on Desktop along with iBooty

8. After that, sn0wbreeze will ask you to put your iPhone into DFU mode for patching it to install custom firmware. Follow the steps on the screen

sn0wbreeze DFU

9. Once your device is in Pwned DFU mode (Black Screen), open iTunes, press Shift key + Restore & point to the iOS 5 IPSW file stored on Desktop

10. Sit back & relax. iTunes will restore your iPhone to iOS 5

Now, if you had earlier selected Simple mode or Expert mode, you must use iBooty to “boot tethered” so you can use Cydia & other jailbreak stuff. If you just selected Baseband preservation mode, you don’t need to use iBooty.

You can now use GEVEY sim or ultrasn0w unlock. To know how to use GEVEY sim on iOS 5, follow the steps in this post. If you’ve anymore queries, feel free to comment below.

[How To] Jailbreak iOS 5 GM with sn0wbreeze & redsn0w

by Mahesh Kukreja on October 5, 2011

Apple seeded iOS 5 GM (Build: 9A334) version to developers after the “Let’s Talk iPhone” keynote. iOS 5 public version will be available on October 12th. The GM version is the last beta version of iOS 5. This version is available only to registered Apple developers.

iOS 5 GM

iPhone hackers were pretty fast in releasing the updated versions of redsn0w & sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iOS 5 GM. These two tools provide only tethered jailbreak for now. And sn0wbreeze gives you the option to preserve baseband while updating to a new iOS version. This helps to use ultrasn0w or GEVEY unlocks.

Supported Devices

Both redsn0w & sn0wbreeze for iOS 5 GM support the following devices:

  • iPhone 3GS Old Bootrom – Untethered
  • iPod Touch 3G, 4 – Tethered
  • iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom), 4(GSM/CDMA) – Tethered
  • iPad 1 – Tethered

How To Jailbreak iOS 5 GM?

1. Download redsn0w 0.9.9b3 / sn0wbreeze 2.8b8

Note: You also need iTunes beta 9 to update to iOS 5 GM

2. Make sure you have iOS 5 GM IPSW file for your device. If you’re going to use redsn0w, you must have iOS 5 GM installed on your device. With sn0wbreeze, you can first create custom firmware and then update via iTunes

3. Run the appropriate tool (sn0wbreeze / redsn0w)

4. For sn0wbreeze:

  • Point to iOS 5 GM & build custom IPSW file
  • It’ll take some time to patch the kernel and build custom IPSW
  • After it is finished, sn0wbreeze will show you instructions to put your device into DFU mode. Once it’s in DFU mode, open iTunes & do Shift+Restore and select the IPSW file from Desktop

For redsn0w:

  • Point to iOS 5 GM & wait till it patches the kernel
  • After that, redns0w will show instructions to put your device into DFU mode. Once it’s in DFU, redsn0w will patch the iOS on your device

5. Once you jailbreak with redsn0w or sn0wbreeze, you’ll have Cydia installed on your iDevice. If your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad restarts, you must “boot tethered” from redsn0w or iBooty.
