Apple releases iOS 4 officially

Apple iOS 4Apple has officially released iOS 4. The iOS 4 comes with about 100 updates including Multitasking, folders, iBooks, iAds, etc..

The update is free for iPod Touch and iPhone users, but the compatible models are: iPhone 3G (no multitasking), iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and 2nd / 3rd generation iPod Touches.

You can get your hands on the latest software by updating via iTunes. If you’re not able to upgrade via iTunes, here are the direct links to the firmwares:

To Update iOS 4 manually, just connect your device and launch iTunes. Now select your device, and click the Update button while holding the Shift key (in Windows) and Option key (on Mac). Browse to the iOS 4 firmware location and chose the Open option to proceed. Let the device get updated.

iPhone OS 4 is now iOS 4

Day 1 of WWDC 2010 at San Fransisco has concluded with announcements of the long awaited iPhone 4 and also the iPhone OS 4 .

Steve made a statement that iPhone OS 4 has been renamed to iOS 4.

The features of iOS 4 include multi-tasking, folders, retina display integration, unified inbox and conversation threading (like GMail), improved flash, more multimedia applications and improved support for business users and enterprise software.

In all, about 1500 new features are included in iOS 4.

Google is still the default search engine in this update.

Apple says iOS 4 will arrive for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and the iPod touch on June 21 — and it’ll be free to iPod touch owners for the first time. Not all features will be included in the iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3G due to their hardware.

The iOS trademark was owned by Cisco. Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple.
