You are probably wondering why anyone would go into the water with a smartphone or a tablet. Besides more obvious activities like reading e-books while taking a bath in a Jacuzzi, there is a whole range of situations when routine usage of a device may result in it getting wet: reading the news poolside, rowing a boat or taking a ferry ride (no way without a favorite gadget!), and the list goes on. Here’s an even more trivial situation: outdoor recreation during a rainy season. Would you constantly drag the tablet along if it was in a waterproof case? We have prepared a small review of different ways to save a tablet from drowning.

There are two types of waterproof cases (also called aquaboxes): rigid and flexible. The latter option is reminiscent of a plastic bag, and the former is quite rare since it is not versatile and is quite bulky.  Rigid cases can handle only a particular model of tablet. On the other hand, with flexible aquaboxes, things get more interesting; there is more of selection and more applications.

Large Whanganui Waterproof iPad Case

Large Whanganui, a product of the company Aquapac, is the first one we put to the test. A mid-sized bag can hold any modern tablet or a bunch of small items combined. Such a case can contain, for instance, a cell phone, documents, papers and other small things that should not get wet.

After packing the device inside the case, turning 3 latches is all that is required for safely walking out into the rain or going to the lake. Not a single drop of water will get inside the case, and for added comfort, a shoulder strap is provided. This solution wins over with its simplicity and a compact storage size. On the downside, the tablet is not secured inside and constantly moves inside the case. By the way, do not be concerned about the combination of a film and a touch screen – they work great together and even allow for writing tweets from the bottom of a pool. The main thing to remember is not to dive deeper than 5 meters to avoid excessive pressure exerted on the iPad. This novelty is available at its manufacturer’s online store for $46.60.

DryCASE Waterproof iPad Case

The American company DryCASE also offers aquabox cases but with a more fundamental approach to the problem. Besides the basic features of the bag such as being waterproof for up to 30 meters, the DryCASE Tablet also includes an air cushion with a hand strap and the ability to plug in headphones, as well as an air removal device.

Thus, one can engage in water sports while listening to music, and if the device is dropped into the water, there is no need to dive in the water to get it back. What is especially pleasant is the ability to remove excessive air from the bag so that the gadget fits snugly inside the case. Due to this capability, the device will not dangle inside the case, allowing for comfortable usage. Such a vacuum also increases the quality of the photos taken with the device; a transparent polyethylene layer will fit the camera lens closely, thus helping to avoid blurry photos. To be sure, this case allows for the device to be used to its full capabilities. This new product can be bought on the manufacture’s site for $59.99.

Tunewear Waterwear for iPad

Another interesting “baggie” is called the Tunewear Waterwear. This time, the manufacturer proposes to seal the device hermetically in the usual aquabox while rolling up the open end and securing the roll with fasteners and latches. This may seem the same as the first variant, but here the designers have put more thought into the comfort involved in using the device inside bag. Thus, they have added a plastic fixing panel for the tablet, which restricts the movements of the device inside.

Additionally, one can fasten a strap on top of the box for easier transportation. Since there is a fixing panel in the lower part of this case, it is harder to fit some other things there, but we are looking to secure the iPad in the first place, right? Tunewear Waterwear seems like an optimal product in terms of price and quality if the ability to listen music is not critical to you. Tunewear aquabox is available at their website for $39.95.

Conclusion

Whichever case you choose for water-related fun, do not forget that these cases are not designed for any kind of significantly deep dives. However, at least one does not need to be worried about a device’s safety during summer recreation or during calm fishing trips along the forest lake.

I just laid my hands on a super cool video converter called Movavi Video Converter. Movavi video converter lets you convert videos for more than 200 devices including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android phones, Nokia, Windows Phone 7, XBox 360 and many more. I first present you with some features of Movavi in brief. The tutorial for converting videos using Movavi is after the break.

Features of Movavi Video Converter

Movavi is a simple-to-use video converter. The main feature of this converter is that it makes full utilization of nVidia GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) installed on your PC or Mac. My XPS 15z has nVidia GT 525M GPU which has a technology known as CUDA. This gives applications the power to utilize GPU memory for its processing. This in turn affects the performance and speed of Movavi by a great leap! When I tried the converter, it actually converted a 5:21 minute video in less than 2 minutes by utilizing 1 GHz nVidia GT 525M GPU.

Movavi - GPU Utilization

Next, Movavi video converter supports more than 170 formats including FLV, MP4, AVI, DAT, MOV, VOB, 3GP & MP3. Also, you can convert videos for devices like Android Phones, Amazon Kindle, Apple, Blackberry, Dell, Epson, HP, HTC, Nokia, Palm, etc.

Movavi - Devices

Apart from the default preset formats, users can also tweak the Audio/Video output preferences depending on their needs.

How To Convert Videos for your iPhone or Any Mobile/Tablet using Movavi?

This tutorial shows how you can convert videos for your iPhone. But you can convert videos for any other mobile device or tablet by choosing the appropriate preset.

1. Download Movavi Video Converter & install it. The demo version comes with a 30-day trial & the full version costs $49.99 (It’s priced at $29.95 till 25th December, 2011)

2. Launch the installed application & select the video file which you want to convert

 Movavi Video Converter

Also select the preset. For this tutorial, I selected “iPhone 4 (1280×720, H.264) (*mp4)

Movavi Preset Selection

You can select any other preset according to your device.

Note: The presets which are supported by nVidia CUDA are marked with a nVidia CUDA logo

3. Next click Convert to convert the video for your iPhone or any other mobile device or tablet. If you’ve a nVidia CUDA GPU, the video will be converted in a very less time. The output video is saved at the location marked by Destination

The video which I converted was originally 128 MB in size. The output video (in mp4 format) was about 85 MB in size. And here are two screenshots of the video running on my iPhone 4

Britney Spears - Criminal

I must say, the quality of the converted video is quite good. And if you’re a video junky, I strongly recommend you to buy Movavi video converter. Of course, you can try a 30-day trial version before buying.

4 Best Siri Alternatives for iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch

by Mahesh Kukreja on November 12, 2011

This is a guest post! If you want to write for us, check out the Guest Post section.

As you know, Siri is like an iPhone geek’s best friend. You can talk to it and it replies. It is a really awesome voice-command feature. When I was playing with an iPhone 4S, I just loved to talk to her. I asked her “Is it going to rain?” and even some silly questions such as “Do you have a mom?” Siri was amazing.

The bad news is, this feature is only available for the iPhone 4S. So here I’ve listed some of the best alternatives to Siri. Although these apps aren’t as cool as Siri, they’re still good alternatives. And all of these are free applications; and they run on iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch.

1. Dragon Go

Dragon Go - 1 Dragon Go - 2 Dragon Go - 3

Dragon Go searches the content from best websites. This app uses 180 popular content providers to deliver results, including AccuWeather, Bing, ESPN, Facebook, Pandora, Rotten Tomatoes, Twitter, Wikipedia, Yelp, YouTube, and Yahoo!. The best result is shown in the center while alternatives are shown in form of tabs.

It also makes use of installed apps like Maps to provide the results. Like you can say, “Directions to Hotel Victor Palace” and Dragon Go will open the Maps app on your iDevice and show you the directions. It can also play Music on the native Music app present in iOS 5 (or on the iPod app in pre iOS 5).

2. Vlingo

Vlingo - 1 Vlingo - 2 Vlingo - 3

Vlingo is another alternative to Siri. I’ve found no other app that does a better job. Just speak to Vlingo and it will help you search up something; update your Facebook status, or text your friends. Vlingo uses Google to search your questions. To update Twitter & Facebook status, you must login into the accounts from within the app. The voice recognition done by Vlingo is quite good.

You can say things like “Text Bob, Message buy milk” or “Search how to tie a tie” and Vlingo will do it for you. This app does a good job for doing what Siri does, but it’s not interactive like Siri. But it’s free and you can try it out.

3. Google Search

Google Search - 1 Google Search - 2 Google Search - 3

Search with Google using your voice. You can search the web, images, videos, products, nearby restaurants and any other Google products. Just ask Google to search something and it will search it for you—it saves some time typing in your search query. Google Search also provides Visual search with Goggles feature.

The results provided are instant. But local results are not provided directly. You need to click “Use location” in the app.

4. Dragon Dictation

Dragon Dictation - 1 Deagon Dictation - 2 Dragon Dictation - 3

Dragon Dictation is an easy to use voice to text app. It turns your voice into words. You just speak in it, and it writes down what you say. In fact, it’s a lot faster than typing the words out. If Dragon dictation did not write down what you said, you can edit it with the keyboard. Then you can email, SMS, or Facebook what you said.

It doesn’t help you get local searches or any information. Dragon Dictation just converts the speech to text. But I think the app is really cool, because you can save time when you want to compose email, SMS or anything else. Just speak & the app will type it for you.

If you know any other Siri alternatives, please share below.
