Apple released iOS 4.2.1 in November 2010 and also Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja) tweeted that Greenpois0n would be updated within few days to support iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Now, a couple of hours back, @p0sixninja tweeted the following:

Greenpois0n for 4.2.1 coming soon

So, I think the Greenpois0n jailbreak tool is almost ready for iOS 4.2.1. Also note, this tool will be an untethered solution for iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Stay tuned for any further news.

All new iPhone/iPod/iPad owners might be wondering if their device with new hardware is vulnerable to exploit found by Geohot. @iphone_dev recently tweeted on Twitter that any new iPhone/iPod/iPad is still vulnerable to the exploits currently available.

Here’s a How To guide to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 using redsn0w 0.9.6.

And here’s a guide to jailbreak untethered on Mac OS using redsn0w 0.9.7

Also, the recent version of redsn0w has been updated to provide one-click tethered boot support! With this update, there is no need of selecting IPSW on each tethered boot!

This is the update #3 on Dev Team blog:

Update #3:  We’ve updated redsn0w to include “one-click” support for those of you running the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.  Using command-line arguments, you can now bypass the screens you’d normally see as you use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered for now”.

The available command line arguments are:

-j to ask redsn0w to “Just boot now tethered for now”
-i <filename> to specify your reference IPSW
-o for old-bootrom iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS
-b <filename> to specify your own boot logo png

For example, to get redsn0w for Mac to do a tethered boot of an iPod touch 4G jailbroken at 4.2.1:

open ~/Desktop/redsn0w.app —args -j -i ~/Desktop/iPod4,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

This assumes both redsn0w and the IPSW are on your OS X desktop, so modify as necessary!  Included in the zip is an example script file that you can double click on to launch redsn0w like this (the Windows example assumes everything is in C:\).  (Mac users: please remember to change the permissions of your custom *.command files to allow execution.)

This should help ease the pain of the tethered jailbreak until @comex comes up with a 4.2.1 untether (or for those of you with legit access to the 4.2b3 IPSW, until the “Jailbreak Monte” untether is out of beta)!

Stay tuned for more news about the jailbreaking scene!

The Dev-team recently updated redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 final!

This is a how-to post to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone, iPod & iPad.

redsn0w is currently untethered for the following devices:

  • iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)
  • iPhone 3
  • iPod touch 2G (Non-MC Model)

And tethered devices are:

  • iPhone 3GS (new bootrom)
  • iPhone 4
  • iPad
  • iPod touch 2G (MC Model)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G

Note: If you want to unlock, just stay where you are. Don’t update to iOS 4.2.1

Step 1: Download redsn0w 0.9.6b4. Download links are in this post.

Step 2: You need to update your iDevice to 4.2.1 via iTunes 10.1. Download links are in here.

Step 3: Launch redsn0w 0.9.6b4 and Browse for iOS 4.2.1 IPSW file.

redsn0w 0.9.6b4 - browse

Step 4: After your firmware has been successfully processed and identified, you’ll see the following screen. Select the options you want and click Next.

redsn0w 0.9.6b4 - install cydia

Step 5: Your firmware will be patched. It may take a few moments. After that, turn off your device and plug it into your computer. Click Next.

redsn0w 0.9.6b4 - turn off device

Step 6: You’ll be shown instructions to enter DFU mode. After your device is in DFU mode, the firmware will be patched and your device will be jailbroken.

If you are one of untethered devices (as mentioned at the beginning of the post), you’re done here. Your device is jailbroken.

But, if you are on a tethered device, you need to follow step 7 every time you boot up your iDevice.

Step 7: You must run your device in the so called “jailbroken state” on every reboot by using “Just boot tethered right now” option. This is needed if you want to SSH your device or run Cydia!

by Mahesh Kukreja on November 23, 2010

Apple recently released iOS 4.2.1 final. iOS 4.2.1 came with many new features and updates. In last post, I told you that Greenp0ison will be updated to support iOS 4.2.1. Now, Dev-team has also updated redsn0w to 0.9.6b4. redsn0w can be used to jailbreak iPhone, iPod & the iPad. redsn0w is based on Geohot’s limera1n exploit.

Recently, Dev-team also released redsn0w 0.9.6b3 which could jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 GM. The new version is a “tethered” jailbreak, meaning you’ll have to jailbreak again once your iDevice loses battery or powers off.

If you want to unlock your iPhone, just stay where you are. Note: Stay where you are. Don’t update to iOS 4.2.1. Save your 4.1 SHSH blobs. Any changes will be permanent. Check update on Dev-team blog.

To download iOS 4.2.1, visit my previous post.

Download redsn0w 0.9.6b4 for Windows and Mac.
