WordPress 2.9.2 Released

by Admin on February 16, 2010

Welcome back!

The new update of WordPress fixes a security vulnerability that was previously reported by Thomas Mackenzie on his personal blog. The vulnerability affects all Wordpress installations with the version number 2.9.0 or later. Previous Wordpress installations are not affected by the vulnerability (but are insecure because of other reasons).

Thomas Mackenzie alerted us to a problem where logged in users can peek at trashed posts belonging to other authors. If you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2. As always, you can visit the Tools->Upgrade menu to upgrade.

-WordPress Development Blog

You can download the latest update here or upgrade directly from your wp-admin.

Happy Blogging.

-Mahesh.

iphone3gs

Apple has launched new iPhone 3G S, which it claims to be the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet. iPhone 3G S features video recording, Voice Control, up to 32GB of storage, and more. The new iPhone 3G S  is twice as fast as iPhone 3G, has got a longer battery life, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, easy video recording and hands free voice control. Check the comparison between iPhone 3G & 3G S and see what has changed.

iphone3gs

iPhone 3G S is powered by iPhone OS 3.0 mobile operating system and has now built in over 100 most requested features like Cut, Copy and Paste, MMS, Spotlight Search, landscape keyboard etc. iPhone 3G S uses OpenGL ES 2.0 standard for high-quality 3D graphics, while supporting 7.2 Mbps HSDPA for faster networking speeds.

Simply “tap to focus”  and the new autofocus 3MP camera adjusts focus, exposure, color and contrast for the best possible image and also includes an automatic macro focus for extra close up shots. Now record high-quality video clips and edit them right on your iPhone 3G S by simply trimming the start and stop points.

The voice control feature allows hands free operation – speak the appropriate commands into the built-in microphone or headset microphone to dial by name or number, and control your favorite music by artist, album or playlist.

iPhone 3G S also features a new built-in digital compass for instant navigation, which integrates well with the iPhone’s built-in GPS that automatically displays the coordinates of your current location.

iPhone 3G S will be available in the US on June 19 for $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB). Remember now iPhone 3G S requires a new two year contract with AT&T.  iPhone OS 3.0 software will be available on June 17 as a free software update via iTunes 8.2 for all iPhone customers. So that means the previous iPhone 3G just got cheaper at $99 only for the 8GB model!

Mac video tutorial company, MacProVideo, on Friday released its iPhone app, allowing customers to transfer and watch video tutorials on the iPhone. The company also released a new set of tutorials for users of Adobe’s professional video software, Premiere.

N.E.D.i (Nonlinear Educating Device for iPhone) features detailed menus that let you quickly find topics and videos that you are looking for. The app also gives you access to the company’s forums, so you can get help from fellow users if you need it.

In addition to the iPhone app, DesignProVideo (MacProVideo’s sister site) released a new set of videos called Premiere CS4 101: Core Premiere CS4. The videos give you an overview of the Premiere workspace, as well as video editing theory like aspect ratios, keyframes and codecs. You’ll also learn about using transitions to achieve effects, manipulating time, and how to create titles to display extra information for your videos.

In its final piece of news, MacProVideo said it will no longer sell DVD copies of its training videos, opting instead to offer only downloadable versions. The company considers the move as a way to help the environment.

N.E.D.i is available free from the App Store. The Premiere tutorial costs $39.50 and is available for immediate download.

SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Released

by Admin on March 24, 2009

Novell unveiled SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 on Tuesday, with features and capabilities that reflect the company’s controversial multiyear agreement with Microsoft.

In 2006, Microsoft and Novell agreed to work on improving compatibility between their products, and pledged not to pursue patent claims against each other’s customers. The move has been widely decried by open-source software advocates.

But the relationship has borne significant fruit, according to Novell. The vendor said SUSE 11 will work “seamlessly” with Windows regarding areas like systems management, virtualization, document formats and even multimedia.

A new feature called Mono Extension provides support for Mono, allowing companies to run .NET applications on Linux systems without having to recompile the programs. The extension will also enable IBM System z mainframe users to run .NET applications.

SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 runs on a wide range of hardware and has also been optimized for “near-native” performance on a range of hypervisors, including VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V and Xen.

While Novell has included many new capabilities, there aren’t necessarily many surprises, said Redmonk analyst Stephen O’Grady. “This is what you can expect from enterprise-class platforms, be they Linux or Windows, at this point. If you’re a general-purpose OS, you need to be able to multitask.”

Mono does provide Novell with a differentiator from other Linux distributions, O’Grady said.

“Novell can do that because of the deal they have with Microsoft,” he added. “Until it’s viewed as patent-safe on all Linux platforms, not just Novell, it’s going to be a tough sell.”

Meanwhile, Novell is also hoping to rev up the application market around its OS, with SUSE Linux Enterprise JeOS (just enough operating system), which ISVs can use along with a set of tools called Suse Studio, to package their products as virtual appliances.

Novell has a “supportability algorithm” for vetting appliances; those that pass muster will receive technical support from Novell.

“You can really start to think of this as mass customization of Linux,” said Novell spokesman Justin Steinman, vice president of solution and product marketing.

Suse Studio is now in alpha. A public beta is scheduled to begin soon, according to Steinman.
