Top 5 RSS Apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad

RSS Feeds.. Thanks to that Really Simple Syndication, I can hardly remember the last time that I went to the actual web pages of my favorite blogs. As all of you have probably already experienced, sometimes you can almost get too many blogs to manage and end up getting incredibly far behind in your reading if you’re away from your desk. Well, there are a myriad of options for mobile RSS readers. In fact, there might be too many, so I’ve decided to give you a rundown of my favorite apps out there for RSS feeds.

Starting from number 5..

5. Reeder

[$2.99 iTunes]

ReederReeder is probably one of the most basic options available for the iPhone. It syncs with your Google Reader account and imports all of that content seamlessly. Aesthetically it deviates from the typical black and white with a softer parchment background that makes reading feel a bit better. There are also options to share content through email, Delicious, Twitter, and a few other options as well. For a barebones app it works pretty well. Unfortunately, there are no subscription capabilities within the app, but for only $2.99 it’s still a pretty good deal.

4. Byline

[$2.99 iTunes]

BylineByline has all the features of the previous app, but with the ability to browse offline as well. It has two-way syncing with your Google Reader account. It is continually updating the cache for the feeds you follow so if you get stuck in a dark subway tunnel, you can have plenty of content to browse until your eventual rescue. Oh yeah… it’s only $2.99 as well and can hold up to 1,000 items in its offline cache, including images.

If you’re a blogger, you may want to read this post:

3. Doppler

[$0.99 iTunes]

DopplerDoppler is also a standard RSS reader, but with more positives. Not only does it sync to Google, it will also update your Google feed as read, etc. to correspond with what you’ve done in the app. It also has offline reading capabilities, and it has the ability to only download/sync selected feeds from your Google Reader account as opposed to syncing the whole thing. This can allow you to only take the “essentials” with you on the road.  Oh… and most importantly, it’s only a third of the price of the previous apps at 99 cents.

2. NetNewsWire

[Free & $2.99 iTunes]

NetNewsWireThis app has a lot of the same features as the previous apps when it comes to Google Reader syncing, but there is one huge difference. It also syncs to the NetNewsWire desktop application! For me this is a big deal. I use NetNewsWire on my desktop all day long for all of my RSS feeds, so it’s nice to have my apps on the computer and my phone working together. It’s also free (ad-supported) with a $2.99 option for the premium ad-free version.

1. NewsRack!

[$4.99 iTunes]

NewsRackThis has become my favorite RSS app by far over the last few months. NewsRack combines the functionality of many of the other RSS readers with an absolutely beautiful interface that’s fun to use. The main screen displays an array of “newspapers” with headlines from your most recent feeds. This makes browsing fairly enjoyable and I tend to enjoy it more than a plain menu of text. Additionally, it has an option for a slideshow view in the iPad version. I could go on about this one for a while (because I use it all the time), but you should check it out and really let it speak for itself. It’s beautiful, functional, and checks in at $4.99. Worth it!

Google will now crawl pages via RSS Feeds

by Mahesh Kukreja on October 31, 2009

Google currently uses various sources to find new content on the web, from links to submitted URLs. This traditional method may not include new content as soon as it goes live. Google is now discovering web sites by automatically scanning RSS and Atom feeds. This new process will help Google more quickly identify web pages and will allow users to find new content in search results as soon as it goes live.

RSS/Atom feeds have been very popular in recent years as a mechanism for content publication. They allow readers to check for new content from publishers. Using feeds for discovery allows Google to index pages more quickly than traditional crawling methods.

In order for Google to use your RSS/Atom feeds for discovery, it’s important that crawling these files is not disallowed by your robots.txt. To find out if Googlebot can crawl your feeds, test your feed URLs with the robots.txt tester in Google Webmaster Tools.

We can’t imagine the count how many blogs coming to web daily. Apart from normal(search engine) visitors, each and every blogger is subscribing and following one or the other blog for sure. This is how the chain goes and pushes RSS factor up and up. So, we need to go with the market and for that we need certain respectable counts on our blogs.

Everything is fine but, How to push the count up? And what are Do’s and Don’ts around this? Today we are going around all about RSS, Tips to increase, Do’s and Don’ts. Here we Go…

Do’s: These are the basic/startup tips which you can follow to increase your count to certain extent.

  1. Offer easy and handy subscribe forms on all the pages of your blog
  2. Remind your first time visitors to subscribe, by offering form at start/end of your article
  3. Put a single and effective word beside subscription form saying “Subscription is free and it won’t cost/disturb you in anyway”
  4. Explain your visitors about benefits they get by subscribing
  5. Be active on blogging by posting consistently or daily
  6. Say thanks and ask your each and every commenter to subscribe to your feeds.
  7. Run some contests and offer prizes to your random subscribers and Offer a full feed
  8. Develop and post a privacy policy for your Web site.
  9. Ask your friends/colleagues to subscribe and refer to their contacts too
  10. Monitor your feedburner weekly and take corrective action toward ‘unverified’ and ‘Inactive’ subscribers.

Don’ts: These are the basic/startup things which you shouldn’t do to keep live in blogosphere and to get more count on your chicklet.

  1. Don’t disturb people by subscribing their mail ids intentionally and ask them to verify the link
  2. Don’t gamble the count with Photoshop or by any means
  3. Don’t take rest for too many days with out posting
  4. Don’t use pop-ups asking to subscribe to feeds or email newsletter with Aweber
  5. Don’t hide/remove the unsubscribe option. Allow users to unsubscribe when don’t want the service
  6. Your subscribers mail id list is an asset that only you can use; do not sell or rent it
  7. Personally Don’t email your subscribers asking to do some favor. This will decrease your status
  8. Don’t ask people to donate bucks until you have a non-profit and useful blog
  9. Don’t offer the books download for subscribing unless they are own/written by you
  10. Don’t mail and ask the reasons to people unsubscribed from your list

This is all about the RSS and Story around it :) Hope you enjoyed the article. Make sure you subscribe to my feeds to receive like this more.

Happy Blogging.
