Tips for Optimizing the Top Social Media Channels

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the science and art of getting search engines to locate your blog, video, website, or any other web content, and ranking it high. This means that when web browsers enter keywords which are relevant to your business or company, they will be able to find you on the first page of the search results.

So, how can you optimize social media to help you achieve your goal of being found online as fast as possible? The following are some resources and tips that will help you optimize the top five social media channels.

1. Facebook

There are three ways of participating in Facebook; Profile (personal), Pages (businesses and companies) and Groups (associations and clubs). The main objective of having a ‘Page’ is to get subscribers (or fans) and stimulate interaction. The secondary objective is to direct them to a different offer page and drive them to your target site. To get more visibility and fans within Facebook, you need to promote your content more tactfully. You can use the wall in your page to publish news, offers and stories to your fans’ home page streams. Another way of communicating with your fans is through direct messages sent to their inboxes. The following are more ideas to consider.

  • Use a page or group profile for your business or company rather than personal since they are more transparent to the search engine crawlers.
  • Choose a URL which contains your keywords
  • Have exclusive offers for your fans only
  • When posting content, make sure you include imagery or video. Facebook users are usually very visual.
  • Publish fresh content 2-3 times every week
  • Analyze, optimize and iterate using ‘Facebook Insights’ to get accurate geographical and demographical information about your fans. The tool can also be used analyze the level of interactions with your posts and page.

2. Blog

Blogging shows true passion and commitment to your industry, which cannot be faked in the long term. Many people cannot blog consistently over time, but those who do reap major rewards and stand out in their industries. The following are some strategies for optimizing your blog.

  • Buy your own domain name, rather than using a sub-domain.
  • Purchase a theme (like a WordPress Thesis theme) which can be optimized.
  • Post content frequently (at least weekly). Search engine crawlers love fresh content.
  • Promote your blog regularly on Twitter.

3. YouTube

  • Create your own personal YouTube channel

  • In your video tags section, put tags which are relevant to the video title.
  • Promote your YouTube video via Twitter and have it on your blog in the video channel section.

4. Twitter

Since 2009, Twitter has been providing ways of communicating, connecting and promoting content from your blog or site.

  • In the account settings, make sure you add your site’s URL.
  • Write a great title. Remember that your full tweet, as well as all its characters, will be indexed by major search engines.
  • Include a retweet button in all your blog posts and embed your Twitter URL in your website. This will offer convenience to your website visitors and will enable your Twitter URL to rank higher in search engines.
  • Have ‘Follow Me’ buttons on your blog and emails.
  • Spare at least 20 characters in your tweet to give room for other people to retweet with comments such as ‘Great Post!’
  • Makes sure your tweet includes a link to your blog posts. This will drive traffic to your blog.

5. LinkedIn

LinkedIn, which started in 2003, is the largest professional network in the world with more than 50 million members. LinkedIn connects you to credible professional contacts and enables you to exchange ideas, opportunities and knowledge with a wide network of professionals. The following are some tips that will help you optimize this channel and enhance yourself as well as your brand.

  • Create a public profile. This is a simple way of building an online presence.
  • Make use of the ‘questions and answers’ tool to create community, begin conversations and present yourself as an expert in a subject matter. When you answer questions, you prove your expertise and encourage people to visit your site.
  • In your homepage, make sure your LinkedIn and Twitter interfaces are activated.
  • Activate the blog feed
  • In your settings, make sure your blogs and sites have relevant keyword descriptions.
