After a couple of leaks of the rumored iPhone 4G/HD, Steve Jobs announced the redefined iPhone 4 at WWDC 2010.

Steve claimed that iPhone 4 has over 100 new features. But, he covered only 8 at the conference.

1. All New Design

The design of the new iPhone looks exactly the same as the ’stolen prototype’. It has glass on the front and back, and steel around the sides. It’s 24% thinner than iPhone 3GS. There are volume controls, a front facing camera, micro sim tray, camera with LED flash, integrated designs etc.

The iPhone 4 is 4.5 x 2.31 inches, and 0.37 inches thick. It weighs 4.8 ounces (137 grams).

2. Retina Display

The iPhone 4 has a 3.5″ screen with a resolution of 960×640 pixels (4X more than 3GS). The screen has 326 pixels per inch. The display is built with the IPS technology and has 800:1 contrast ratio.

The display makes existing apps look better.

3. The A4 Chip & other Hardware

The iPhone 4 is powered by Apple’s A4 Chip. The battery life has been improved.

  • 7 hours of 3G talk
  • 6 hours of 3G browsing
  • 10 hours of WiFi browsing
  • 10 hours of video
  • 40 hours of music
  • 300 hours of standby

Other hardware spces include micro sim tray, Quad band HSDPA (7.2Mbps), Dual mics, 802.11n WiFi, GPS, accelerometer.

4. Gyroscope

There’s a 3 axis gyroscope in the iPhone 4, and it’s tied to the accelerometer together for six axis. It’s perfect for gaming. Steve also gave a demo of a simple wood game at the conference.

5. A new camera system

There’s a 5 megapixel camera on the rear. It comes with a 5X digital zoom, Tap to Focus, LED Flash and a backside illuminated sensor. The camera also records HD video with 720p at 30fps. Here’s a pic snapped with the cam:

iPhone 4 also has a front facing VGA camera.

6. iPhone OS 4

Apple renamed the iPhone OS 4 to iOS 4. I’ve written a separate post for iOS 4.

7. iBooks

iBooks is coming to the Apple iPhone 4. It includes a bookshelf, PDF reader and iBookstore. The iBookstore joins iTunes and the App Store.

8. iAds

Apple is launching iAds for the developers to earn money. Some of the brands that will be advertising in the iAds are Nissan, Citi, Unilever, AT&T, Chanel, GE, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Geico, Campbells, Sears, JC Penny, Target, Best Buy, Direct TV, TBS, and Disney.

Steve said, iAds are projected to represent 48% of the mobile advertising market in the second half of 2010.

Price and availability

The iPhone 4 will be available in black or white on June 24th, and will cost $199 and $299 for 16 and 32GB respectively. The preorders start on June 15th.

In start, Apple will ship iPhone 4 to only 5 countries: US, France, Germany, UK, Japan.

A revolutionary mobile phone of our time.
And now I’m thinking what the iPhone 5 will have to offer.
