A few minutes back, untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S & iPad 2 was released. This jailbreak supports the following:

  • iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0 & iOS 5.0.1
  • iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1

Absinthe is a GUI tool for jailbreaking iPhone 4S & iPad 2 on iOS 5.0/5.0.1. It’s released by Chronic Dev team & is available for download on their site greenpois0n.com.

How To Jailbreak iPhone 4S & iPad 2 using Absinthe?

1. Make sure to backup via iTunes before proceeding with the jailbreak

2. Download Absinthe [Mac] [Windows] [Linux]

Note: Greenpois0n.com is facing server issues & might be currently down.

3. Connect your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 via USB

4. Launch Absinthe & click Jailbreak

The beginning part of the jailbreak process takes some time. Your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 will show “Restoring in Progress”. But be patient and wait till it’s completely finished.

If Absinthe shows “Error establishing a database connection”, go to Settings, turn on VPN and wait.

  • Toggle VPN only AFTER Absinthe says it’s done, or it will not work.
  • VPN SHOULD error and then reboot soon. If it does not, rerun Absinthe!

If you get a strange problem, restore your iPhone with iTunes, if you can (i.e. if you’re not on 5.0 waiting for an eventual 4S unlock).

5. Once completed, you should see an Absinthe icon on the Homescreen. Tap the Absinthe icon, and it should load the GreenPois0n website, and then your iDevice will reboot. After that, Cydia icon will have replaced the Absinthe icon.

Great tutorial! I had to turn on the “jailbreak” VPN on my 4s to get it to work but, otherwise you got it right.

It was very fast from start to finish on my 4s, but on the iPad 2 it’s taking forever (still at “Restore in Progress”). Is there any one else experiencing/seeing this?

What i like about Absinthe is that it performs jailbreak in fewer steps than Redsn0w.

Untethered jailbreak is not available for iOS 4.3.5. Untethered jailbreak is available for iOS 4.3.3 and iOS 5.0.1. You can preserve baseband and update to iOS 5.0.1 or downgrade back to iOS 4.3.3 (if you’ve SHSH blobs).
