Apple released iOS 5.1 on 7th March 2012 along with new models of iPad & Apple TV. The iPhone Dev Team was quick enough to jailbreak the newly released iOS 5.1 on non A5 devices. The jailbreak is only tethered for now (except for iPhone 3Gs – Old Bootrom) and is available for the following devices:

  • iPhone 3GS – New Bootrom
  • iPhone 3GS – Old Bootrom – Untethered
  • iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA)
  • iPad
  • iPod Touch 3G/4

There’s currently no low-level exploit for A5 devices including iPhone 4S & iPad 2. Hence, these cannot be jailbroken currently. The exploits used by Absinthe have been patched by Apple in iOS 5.1. So, if you’re using iPhone 4S or iPad 2 & rely on jailbreak don’t update to iOS 5.1.

Step 1: Update your iPhone, iPod or iPad to iOS 5.1. You can download iOS 5.1 here.

Note: If you’re using an iPhone and rely on Gevey or ultrasn0w unlock, make sure you preserve the baseband by creating a custom iOS 5.1 using redsn0w. And then jailbreak.

Step 2: Download redsn0w and launch it

After this, redsn0w will start jailbreaking iOS 5.1 installed on your iDevice. Wait for a few minutes till redsn0w shows “Done” & your iDevice boots up. Cydia will be installed on the homescreen

The jailbreak is tethered. Every time your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad switches off, you must launch redsn0w and slect “Just Boot” from Extras menu.
